Media Synthesize Blog entery #9

Current media, such as social media, influence people to overconsume products like water bottles, beauty products, and clothing. According to Webster's dictionary, overconsumption is excessive consumption or use of something. Many social media apps now feature integrated 'shops,' allowing users to purchase items promoted by their favorite creators. This seamless shopping experience makes it easier for users to discover and buy products while scrolling through platforms like Instagram and TikTok.

While these in-app shop features on most social media platforms can lead to overconsumption, they also offer significant benefits. Many platforms allow users with a business license to sell their products directly. This helps small business owners expand their reach and enables them to promote their shops nationally through ads and videos, connecting with their target audience more effectively. This also presents the risk of larger companies exploiting smaller businesses by replicating their unique ideas or products. With greater resources for production, marketing, and distribution, these bigger companies can dominate the market, attract a larger customer base, and generate significantly higher profits, often leaving small business owners at a disadvantage.Big companies will often copy the design of a successful small business product and mass-produce it, undercutting the small business on price

In any case, my view of media has shifted in that today it's so easy to shop directly through social media apps. While this ease can also lead to overconsumption, it indicates great opportunities for small business owners to reach wider audiences. Yet, it's clear this digital marketplace is fraught with challenges such as larger companies profiting off of smaller creators' ideas, which makes me more critical of how media shapes consumer habits and business opportunities.

  1. I always enjoy your insight, especially during our discussions in class. I would have to agree the digital market has allowed anyone to become a buyer or seller. For example, facebook marketplace can be used to buy or sell anything. Unfortunately, there is no oversight on fraud. Thankfully I was blessed and was able to purchase my current car from this platform.

  2. Hi Ireland, I like how you explained the benefits and challenges of in app shopping on social media. I agree that it has made it easier for small businesses to expand their products to more people. But it is crazy how larger businesses will copy their designs to outprice small businesses.

  3. I also agree that these platforms are great for small businesses to get out there. It's been the same way with YouTube recommending me bands that only have a few monthly listeners on Spotify.
